WHAT I KNOW ABOUT ELLEN GABRIEL!
Ellen Gabriel Mohawk is president of Quebec Native Women's Association. Ellen Grew up in a place call Kanehsata:ke.. and her role modles including her grandmother, her mother, and her aunts. They joined the Native Women's movement to fight for the right of Native women that were violated by the sexis law of Indian Act.During the 1960s, the various revolutions took place at times that inspired her to have interest in justice and human rights.
Ellen had a passion for art and art that was encouraged by her parents. Ellen Gabriel received a Bachelor of Fine Art, majoring in Studio Art, from Concorolia University in 1990. It is a year ever since the Oka Crisis passed. Ellen appeared on the cover of the issue of the Mirror on April, 25 1991. Ellen had been one of the chief spokespeople for the community thruoghout the crisis and a high profile during 77-day standoff.
She joined the members of her community in March 1990 to protect The Pines from expansion of a golf course of Oka. Ellen talk about the community and how she could change it " This is a community in pain," she says. " We've forgotten how to communicate with each other, and many of us have forgotten our values, our respect for one another, for our tradition and for the Earth." That is what Ellen Gabriel siad in her own word while talking to her community.
Ellen highlights the importance of the oral for transmission of values and community history, in addition to underlining the wisdom, moral authority of the elders. In Aboriginal culture nature like trees or rocks can also be considered as an " elder ."
